On March 22, 2017, at 2:20 PM UTC, the city of London experienced terror and chaos at Westminster Bridge. British-born Khalid Masood drove a rental vehicle at 40 mph onto the sidewalk of Westminster Bridge twice, and then crashed the car into the gates at the Houses of Parliament. Masood, 52, then exited the vehicle and stabbed police officer Keith Palmer while attempting to enter Parliament. At this point, armed police officers shot down Masood. The entire attack only lasted 82 seconds, but many civilians were injured. Two people, Kurt Cochran of Utah and Aysha Frade of the UK, died as a result of the vehicle’s impact. Keith Palmer died from his chest wounds, and a fourth victim died after being taken off life support in the hospital. At least 50 other people have sustained injuries. The unofficial news channel for ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) claimed responsibility for this attack. They claimed Masood was “a soldier of the Islamic State,” though Masood was not under surveillance for terrorist ties. However, by ISIL claiming responsibility, it is considered an act of Islamic extremism. Masood had a history of run-ins with the law, most notably for criminal damage and possession of offensive weapons. Though the exact reason “why” remains unknown, authorities continue to investigate.
