SPINACH = BEATING HEART
Scientists at Massachusetts’ Worcester Polytechnic Institute have made a historic advancement in human tissue engineering, transforming a spinach leaf into an active, vascular model of a human heart. A spinach leaf was chosen for the experiment because of its network of intricate, branching veins, a feature it shares with human cardiac system. At the start of the procedure, all plants cells were removed from the spinach, leaving only cellulose, a material previously used in cartilage tissue engineering and wound healing. The cellulose was then covered with live human cells, which reproduced around the spinach’s “framework.” Fluids and microbeads were then pumped through the miniscule veins, demonstrating that blood could flow throughout the cellulose system. In the past, though scientists have succeeded in generating larger human tissue elements, they have struggled to reproduce functional blood vessels within the tissue, making WPI’s achievement truly a groundbreaking one.

OBAMACARE STAYS…FOR NOW
President Trump has been dealt his first major legislative defeat, as top House Republicans have withdrawn legislation designed to repeal the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). After months spent promising a plan of greater efficiency and affordability, House speaker Paul Ryan conceded defeat, admitting, “we’re going to be living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future.” After the bill was pulled, Trump commented, “The best thing that could happen is exactly what happened — watch, Obamacare unfortunately will explode.” He went on to explain the bill was pulled before vote because Republicans had been made aware it was 10 to 15 votes short of passage. Trump’s presidency has been quite rocky thus far; his travel ban, and his redraft of it, were blocked in court, his national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned amidst questions regarding ties to the Russian government, and after the healthcare defeat, Trump’s approval ratings have reached new lows.

OHIO NIGHTCLUB GUNFIGHT. WHAT HAPPENED?
On Saturday night, an argument inside a crowded Cincinnati nightspot escalated into a full-scale gunfight, leaving one man dead and 14 others wounded. It has been established that the incident was in no way terror-related, though a clear motive for the shooting has not yet emerged. Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley said “the very large establishment” was packed with a “couple of hundred people,” when, "several local men got into some kind of dispute inside the bar and it escalated into shots being fired from several individuals.”
Despite thorough security checks at the entrance, the shooters (who have yet to be identified), were able to bring multiple guns into the nightclub. Cameo Night Club has had violence troubles in the past—on New Year’s Day 2015, a shooting occurred inside the club, followed by another in the parking lot that September.
