After five meets, the Green Knights cross country team sits with a record of 2-3. The group picked up victories over DePaul and Passaic Valley and suffered defeats to powerhouses Don Bosco, Bergen Catholic, and Wayne Valley.
So far, the team has been led by star sophomore, Patrick Buckley. Dalton Collins ‘18, Luke Plescia ‘18, and Gage Poindexter ‘18 have also established themselves as capable varsity runners. Jimmy Fitzpatrick ‘18, another varsity runner, had this to say, “I think our team has a lot of potential. We have promising young talent and although we have had some tough races we are improving and getting better every practice. Patrick Buckley is our leader but we have great runners surrounding him and I think we are going to do well in our upcoming meets.”
Although the losses to Wayne Valley and Bergen Catholic were disappointing, there is plenty of optimism that the group can have a quick turn around before their final league meet on September 26 against Paramus Catholic. A confident group of freshmen have also gotten better. Regarding the incoming class Head Coach Nick DeVito ‘97 said, “With just shy of a month left until the start of the championship season we’ve had continued growth amongst the freshman team and could see a few contribute at the varsity level.” The Freshman/Junior Varsity Championships are currently scheduled for October 27 at Darlington County Park in Mahwah, NJ.
With plenty of time before the league and county championships, much improvement will be expected out of the Green Knights. For now, the date circled is September 26 against PC, a team they suffered a narrow defeat to last year.
