In recent years cell phones have become a major priority in teenagers lives. Teachers often are angered with the presence of so many phones out when they are teaching. It is a distraction from the things that students should be paying attention to.
This has resulted in classrooms having clear phone boxes or paper shipping envelopes to keep the phones out of students hands. They still stay on top of their desk where they can see them.
At certain times throughout class, teachers will allow students to check their phones and reply to friends, then get right back to learning. However, not all teachers will allow this. Some feel that class time is for learning not playing on the cell phone.
“We have the boxes in health, and I just go on my phone anyway while it stays in the box,” said Emma Cahill, sophomore. Sometimes the boxes do not keep the students attention on class.
This may only apply to the people sitting farther away from the teacher, and those who think the teacher cannot see what they are doing. Teachers are not oblivious to the students tapping slyly on their cell phone while the instructor is talking.
“I use phone boxes because the students can’t see through it when their phone dings,” said Mrs. Jennifer Cierech, Spanish teacher. The students also do not seem to mind the envelopes on their desks.
“I’ve seen a great change in overall grades and attention,” said Mrs. Cierech. A lot of other teachers are joining in on the success of the phone envelopes and boxes.
Another aspect that comes along with trying to keep phones away from students is the teachers trying to prepare them for the real world. If a person is texting during an important meeting or at a job, his or her boss may not appreciate this.
It is not very respectful to be on the phone, and it could cost someone a job. So, teachers are trying to prepare by taking the attention from the phones to the class.
