Top 5 Must-Watch Netflix Original Series

#1. Stranger Things (2016)

The hit American science fiction-horror television series made its debut last year with its first season, comprised of eight episodes. It was created, written, directed and co-executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, as well as co-executive-produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The show, set in the 1980’s in fictional Hawkins, Indiana, the plot centers around a group of middle-school boys--one of whom disappears in a mysterious way. His friends and the town start efforts to locate him, and supernatural events begin happening in the small town. Along the way, they meet a peculiar girl they name “Eleven” with a troubling past who may have the answers they are looking for.

If you are a fan of E.T (1982), Poltergeist (1982), or American Horror Story (2011), Stranger Things may be the next show to binge on this spring break.

#2. Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star in this horror-comedy hit, directed by Victor Fresco. They play Sheila and Joel, married realtors living in Santa Clarita, California with their teenage daughter when disaster strikes. Sheila mysteriously becomes infected and suddenly craves human flesh. Desperate to maintain their marriage and keep his wife happy, Joel agrees to help feed Sheila’s cravings. The pair set out on tag-team murder escapades, getting themselves into tricky situations and somehow making it all hilarious.

Fan of zombies and laugh-out-loud humor? If so, Santa Clarita Diet is perfect for you. You’ll never look at your deep freezer the same way again.

#3. House of Cards (2013)

House of Cards is an American political drama web television series created by Beau Willimon. The show is an adaptation of British Broadcasting Network’s series, also named “House of Cards”, and is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. It is set in Washington, D.C, and tells the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a power-hungry politician. After being denied a job as Secretary of State, Underwood plots to gain a position of even greater power. House of Cards has won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globes for its spectacular execution.

This political drama is similar to the well-known shows Scandal (2012), White Collar (2009), and 24 (2001), and is sure to please.

#4. 3% (2016)

3% is a dystopian thriller series created by Pedro Aguilera, starring Bianca Comparato and João Miguel. It is Netflix's first original Brazilian production and the second produced in Latin America, the first being Club de Cuervos. The show is set in the future, where at the age of 20, people are given the chance to leave the poverty-stricken slums of their hometown to live in the elite, paradisiacal location dubbed “The Offshore”. They are presented this opportunity if they pass a series of tests referred to as the Process. 3% shows the candidates’ progress- and failure- as they each try desperately to make it through each challenge- and reveals that some of them hold secrets and ulterior motives that could change the way their society functions. The show’s title refers to the fact that only three percent of the original candidates succeed and make it to the Offshore.

Only downside? The show is entirely in Portuguese. Fortunately, there are subtitles and voice-over options available in English, though there are some slight differences in the wording of the actors. All language barriers aside, this show is phenomenal. And, there are only eight episodes (so far- it has been renewed for a second season), so a huge time commitment is not a problem.

#5. Black Mirror (2011)

This unique sci-fi British television series, created by Charlie Broker, presents chilling takes on modern society, with standalone episodes each focusing on a different topic. These are centered around dark themes that suggest how the world could change as a result of new types of technology. Broker commented, "each episode has a different cast, a different setting, even a different reality. But they're all about the way we live now – and the way we might be living in 10 minutes' time if we're clumsy." The series has received much praise and has seen an increase in international interest after being added to Netflix.

These episodes will change the way you see the world. Grab a friend and watch!
