When I think of St. Patrick's Day I think of clovers and food! However, there is much more to the holiday than I originally thought. There are so many family traditions that I never knew existed. My family has never celebrated St. Patrick's Day, but I might convince them to start this year! It seems like a good way to bond over religion, and of course food.
On St. Patrick's day there is always a mass. Irish children also wore crosses on their clothing that day. These crosses were all hand made by the children the week before St. Patrick's Day. The girls wore a more ornate cross, and the boys wore a more simple one. The adult me made a cross that was to be placed in their homes.
After mass, the women went home to cook the feast while the men went to the pub to have a drink called St. Patrick's Pot. Dinner consisted of a piece of boiled bacon, potatoes, and cabbage. Soda bread was served on the side. After dinner the families would enjoy music and other entertainment in their homes or with friends at their homes!
