Central Park’s Great Lawn recently played host to the fifth annual Global Citizen festival, a star-studded charity celebration featuring both pop music performances and activism presentations from leaders, politicians and actors. This year’s festival hosts included Chelsea Handler, Neil Patrick-Harris, Priyanka Chopra and Jordan’s Queen Rania, as well as musical guests like Metallica, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer, Ellie Goulding and Demi Lovato.
The sponsor of the event, Global Citizen, identifies itself as a “social action platform for a global generation” seeking to end extreme poverty worldwide. To further their overall goal, Global Citizen has partnered with the U.N. Development Program and UNICEF to address individual issues faced in struggling and developing countries, like girls and women’s rights, water and sanitation, environment, health and education.
To jumpstart positive action, individuals everywhere are asked to participate in whatever capacity they can, such as creating or promoting poverty awareness campaigns via social media. Campaigns like these can then generate emails and tweets to be directed towards politicians and leaders with the power to take significant positive action. For more campaign examples and ways to participate, visit www.globalcitizen.org today.
