On Feb. 12, millions tuned in to watch the 59th Annual Grammy Awards hosted by late-night comedian James Corden. The biggest names in music all gathered in the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the gift of music and their accomplishments. Every year, the Grammy’s recognize musicians for their hard work and dedication to the industry. The 2017 Grammys featured performances from artists such as Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.
The Recording Academy puts a heavy emphasis on musical education and strives to use the award show to draw attention to the importance of music and the impact it has on the world. Not only does the Academy celebrate the most important artists of the present, but also the past, paying tribute to artists such as George Michael, The Bee Gees, and Prince.
Adele paid tribute to George Michael with a rendition of his hit song “Fastlove,” However, her performance raised controversy because, after starting in the wrong key, Adele requested to restart the performance in order to get it right. Many critics felt that her mistake was disrespectful to the late George Michael and that it did not give him the tribute he deserved. However, others feel that she showed a greater respect for him by stopping and restarting the song to do it the proper way. Adele also made headlines after taking home 5 major Grammys, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Bruno Mars also dropped jaws with his tribute to Prince, with Billboard naming it the best performance of the night. Mars’ tribute to Prince showcased his legacy and paid great homage to the late music legend. He also performed his song “That’s What I Like” from his most recent album “24k Magic,” once again sharing his musical gift with the world.
Another showstopping performance of the night was Beyonce’s touching performance that focused on the love of a mother and the empowerment of women. Ed Sheeran also returned to the stage after his lengthy hiatus performing his new hit “Shape of You.” Eventually, the night came to close with a rocking duet from Lady Gaga and Metallica that definitely kept people at the edge of their seats.
James Corden hosting made the show a night to remember from beginning to end. He started the show with a grand entrance, even falling down an entire flight of stairs. He also got the entire arena to sing “Sweet Caroline” and he even went on stage in his underwear. The comedic elements he added to the ceremony not only made it more entertaining, but more memorable as well.
Overall, the 59th Grammy Awards was a night to remember for the musicians and the spectators. James Corden added to the magic of the night by adding a comedic flair that not many other hosts have done in the past. This years Grammy awards truly embodied the power of music and how important it is.
