WHO IS NEIL GORSUCH?
AT 49 YEARS OLD, HE IS THE YOUNGEST NOMINEE TO THE NATION'S HIGHEST COURT IN MORE THAN A QUARTER CENTURY
Once appointed to the Supreme Court, a justice is entitled to a lifetime tenure, should they desire one. This is one of the reasons why the nomination of Neil Gorsuch is so significant—he is the youngest nominee in 25 years, and should he be approved, Gorsuch could possibly serve on the court for decades to come. On average, a justice serves 16 years, though the longest serving justice was William O. Douglas, who served 36 years, from 1939 to 1975. Justice John Rutledge holds the shortest tenure ever, having served just one year, from 1790 to 1791. The oldest individual to ever serve on the court was Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who held his position from 1902 to 1932, and was 90 when he retired. The youngest person to ever join the Supreme Court was Associate Justice Joseph Story, who was a mere 32 years old when sworn in, and went on to serve from 1811 from 1845.

IS CONSIDERED A CONSERVATIVE INTELLECTUAL, KNOWN FOR BACKING RELIGIOUS RIGHTS AND STANDING AGAINST EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE
The political world is divided by a never-ending glossary of ideologies: neoliberalist, paleoconservative, federalist, protectionist, autonomist, etc. Partisan specialists consider Gorsuch to hold “conservative intellectual” views, which are defined by the website intellectualconservative.com as a truly “American set of principles and values”. Pretty vague, though the site goes on to describe a conservative intellectual as possessing “a sound and uncompromising moral compass, ethical behaviors that exhibit a personal conviction to moral foundations, a fiscally responsible reverence for free-market economics and limited government, and a political view that aligns with all moral, ethical and fiscally responsible convictions”. Of course, Republicans and Democrats would both offer separate definitions for some of these phrasings and terms, but the basic idea comes across.

HIS MOTHER WAS THE HEAD OF THE EPA UNDER PRESIDENT REAGAN
Anne Gorsuch, Neil’s mother, was President Ronald Reagan’s first EPA exec as well as the first female leader of the organization. Quite ironic, given that President Trump is an outspoken detractor of the EPA. In fact, Trump’s EPA transition team has been quoted as saying his goal is to reduce the department to 2/3 its current size and cut its existing budget in half. Even more ironic is the fact that Mrs. Gorsuch came into the job with similar intentions. The result? Chaos and fallout, culminating in the forced removal of Mrs. Gorsuch by President Reagan. As explained by the New York Times in 1983, “Anne Gorsuch inherited one of the most efficient and capable agencies in government. She has turned it into an Augean stable, reeking of cynicism, mismanagement and decay.”
Neil Gorsuch’s mother once ran the EPA. It didn’t go well.

GRADUATED FROM HARVARD LAW SCHOOL IN 1991, THE SAME CLASS AS PRESIDENT OBAMA
No matter your party or policy stances, it can be universally agreed that Gorsuch’s educational background is solid—in fact, as a 1991 graduate of Harvard Law School, he was in the same class as President Obama, who was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. While the two didn’t know each other, Obama’s former “ethics czar” and fellow Harvard Law ’91 grad Norm Eisen was an acquaintance of Gorsuch. Eisen comments, “it was a law school class crowded with luminaries, of all political persuasions…but Neil was right up there. And he’s a very decent person, too.” Gorsch’s schooling carries in a grand Supreme Court tradition, as every justice to serve has graduated from either Harvard or Yale Law (save for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who attended Harvard before transferring to Columbia, where she ultimately earned her degree).

WAS ONCE A LAW CLERK FOR PRESENT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ANTHONY KENNEDY
After graduation from Harvard Law in 1991, Gorsuch began his clerkship career on the D.C. circuit, where he served US Court of Appeals Judge David B. Sentelle until 1992. The following year he began clerkships with Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and Byron White, which lasted until 1994. Unlike court administrative staff, such as a courtroom deputy or a court clerk, a law clerk actively assists the judge in establishing their determinations. As a legal clerk, Gorsuch would have provided research assistance to the justices before court dates, as well as help writing opinions during decisions. Gorsuch’s judicial experience also includes serving as Deputy Associate Attorney General at the US Department of Justice. Gorsuch is currently a federal appellate judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
