Nelson Mandela was born in into the village of Mzevo, in 1918. His parents granted him the name "Nelson" when the decided to follow the village custom in giving all the kids "Christian" names. Mandela had always been known to protest problems, as he was expelled from the College when he decided to join a student protest. He enter politics in 1944 when he joined the African National Congress. Mandela spent about 11 years in politics before he ran into trouble with the law. After experiencing law trouble in South Africa, Mandela traveled to other parts of Africa and to England. After returning to South Africa, he was arrested and charged with secretly leaving the country and attempt to spark a strike. Mandela joined 10 others in the sabotage of a trial known as the Rivonia Trial. It was here where he gave his famous "Speech from the Dock". He and ten others were sentenced to life in prison. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, he transferred prisons and spent the last 14 months of his sentence there. After being released, he started talks about ending white minority rule. In 1993 he won the Nobel Peace Prize. On May 10th, 1994 he was inaugurated as South Africa's first democratically elected president. After one term, he stepped down and continued to work a children's fund he set up in 1995. He spent his entire life, fighting against the oppressed population of not only South Africa, but other countries. He was a true inspiration to those who have been oppressed or discriminated against.
