Traditionally, it’s been mostly private schools that require students to wear uniforms, but in recent years, the number of public schools with uniform policies has risen significantly, with nearly one in five now requiring them. School administrators claim uniforms and dress codes can reduce bullying, decrease distraction, and in some urban areas, cut down on gang related conflicts. Many students claim these policies stifle their individuality, as well as reduce the energy and excitement of the school environment.
