DID LINDSAY LOHAN CONVERT TO ISLAM?
After clearing out her Instagram and replacing its bio with the traditional Arabic greeting of the Nation of Islam (“alaikum salam”, or “peace be unto you”), Lindsay Lohan is rumored to have converted to Islam. During a recent interview, Lohan mentioned relating to Islam, saying at the time: “My very close friends, who have been there for me a lot in London, are Saudi and they gave me the Qu’ran. It opened doors for me to experience spirituality, to find another true meaning. This is who I am.” In response, Muslims of the social media world have reacted positively, inviting Lindsay towards their faith with pride and blessings. A long-time social and political activist, Lohan has spent extended time in and around the Middle East working with refugees in Syria, Abu Dhabi and Turkey, and recently, spent the New Year in Dubai.

RINGLING BROTHERS CIRCUS ENDS ITS RUN
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus have announced that May 2017 will mark the end of their “Greatest Show on Earth”, capping its 146-year run as the nation’s premier traveling carnival show. Beginning in the mid-90s, a series of lawsuits against the company from animal rights groups led to a gradual scaling back of exotic animal features in circus shows, one of RBB&B’s primary draws—ultimately, this was its undoing. After a 2015 decision to retire the show’s elephants yielded a much more dramatic decline in ticket sales than was first projected, owners Feld Entertainment Inc. have deemed “the circus an unsustainable business for the company”, and have chosen to refocus on other traveling shows like Marvel Universe LIVE!, Monster Jam and Disney on Ice.

LADY LIBERTY GETS A MAKEOVER
The new era of diversity in American currency design continues, as the U.S. Mint has announced it will release a 2017 version of the $100 gold coin that for the first time depicts Lady Liberty as a black woman. U.S. Mint Chief of Staff Elisa Basnight calls the 225th Anniversary Gold Coin, to be released this April, a “metallic footprint of our nation’s history,’’ representing “society’s continued evolution” of the American ideal of liberty. Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. Mint Rhett Jeppson elaborates—‘‘our Founding Fathers wanted ideals on their coins…what you see us doing today is trying to embody the ideal of Liberty, with recognition in honoring our past, but looking to who we are as a people today.’’ This move follows last year’s announcement that Harriet Tubman will soon replace Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill.
