Ronald Reagan once said, “You can tell a lot about a fella’s character by the way eats jelly beans; whether he picks out all of one color or just grabs a handful”. I did some research and most people really don’t have a clear understanding which way that quote was supposed to go. For me it is pretty easy: I believe that this quote is geared more toward leadership than anything else. Someone who only picks out one color is alluding to the fact that a lot people are close minded and aren’t open to new ideas. They are confident, too confident in themselves, perhaps, and don’t deliver the best results. On the other hand, you have those who just grab a handful. The jelly beans in the situation are the American People and the hand was his hand. He believed a leader was someone who listened to everything and made his decision after all that has been said. The part then implied, is that they follow through with that decision despite brutal backlash that may come with it. It’s a matter of principle.
Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” Leaders who are true leaders have the courage to stand up for what they believe in. There may be many obstacles in the leader’s way and a bunch of people that want to “cause disruption” or “fight back” against them. You never, ever should let people stand in the way of what you believe. At the same time, the people who are competent will sit down and listen no matter what the other side says. This has been lost in American today.
Certain people have no sense about the other side of a situation and therefore will not stop what they are doing. It is up to the new and upcoming leaders to change this.
