Last year the PA DCNR (Department of Conservation and National Resources) named the Standing Stone Trail as its Trail of the Year. One of the most interesting parts of this trail is a section called the Thousand Steps, which is less than 40 miles away from Juniata County.
Although the sign at the entrance clearly says “1000 Steps”, let’s be clear that there are definitely more than 1000 steps to climb. Upon arrival you will climb approximately 15-20 steps before reaching the “official” first step, so don’t be fooled like I was!
Once you begin your adventure up the mountain, you come to realize the steps are not small, per se, but rather steep and tall.
Of course, there are many more exciting features of the hike than climbing up the 1000 stone steps. The beauty surrounding you is definitely enough of an excuse to relax and take pictures of the trees and numbered stones as well. Take it from experience--breaks are a necessity if you’re a nature lover like I am.
Because your journey is long, I highly recommend taking plenty of water and comfortable shoes and clothes, especially if you plan to make your trip in the summer. You might not be thrilled about the idea of climbing more than one thousand steps and getting all sweaty, tired, and sore, but the views will certainly outweigh any soreness.
Once you reach the top of the steps, there is a short trail to walk to reach a spectacular view of the valley below.
You may also want to check out the other longer trails which take you around the mountain to other incredible vistas . Once you’ve finished exploring the new trails, you will get to experience climbing down all the steps again. At the end of the day you can say you’ve hiked over 2000 steps! The feeling of accomplishment is one you have to experience.
