NIXON AND TREASON
A new Richard Nixon biography reveals the former president tried to sabotage Vietnam War peace talks to serve his own campaign. Recently published excerpts from the book disclose that, “a newfound cache of notes left by H. R. Haldeman, his closest aide, shows that Nixon directed his campaign's efforts to scuttle the peace talks, which he feared could give his opponent, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, an edge in the 1968 election. On Oct. 22, 1968, he ordered Haldeman to ‘monkey wrench’ the initiative.” The excerpts continue—“Haldeman scrawled, recording Nixon's orders, ‘any other way to monkey wrench it? Anything RN can do.’" The book also reveals that other high-ranking government officials grew suspicious of Nixon’s intentions, including former Republican senator and minority leader Everett Dirksen, and outgoing President Lyndon B. Johnson.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS SPARE ETHICS AGENCY
After a plan to gut an independent watchdog agency was met with raucous national criticism, House Republicans have dropped the proposal. The decision was made one day after a secret meeting of House Republicans yielded a vote to strip the Office of Congressional Ethics, an organization originally formed as a response to multiple House integrity scandals, some of which landed representatives in jail. The proposal was seen by many as an attempted show of power in a new age of unified Republican rule, though both House Speaker Paul Ryan and majority leader Kevin McCarthy opposed the move from its inception. President-elect Trump agreed, tweeting “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority?”

ASSANGE DENIES RUSSIAN CONNECTION
In an interview with FOX News, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has confirmed that Russia did not perform the hacks that supplied his organization with controversial information on John Podesta and the DNC. FOX’s Sean Hannity asked Assange, “can you say to the American people, unequivocally, that you did not get this information…from Russia or anybody associated with Russia?”, to which Assange replied, “we can say, we have said…our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party.” The revelation comes after the Obama administration spent weeks insisting Russia had hacked confidential US government and DNC servers, an allegation that Assange labeled as an attempt to “delegitimize the Trump administration as it goes into the White House…to say that President-elect Trump is not a legitimate President.”

WHAT'S TO BECOME OF OBAMACARE?
Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway’s recent statements regarding the future of Obamacare have left many wondering if the President-elect truly intends to dismantle the program as quickly and thoroughly as he has promised to. Conway expressed that assembling a replacement act before repealing Obamacare would be “the ideal situation.” She also added, “some experts say it could take years to complete the process…we don’t want anyone who currently has insurance to not have insurance.” In a separate interview, Conway commented that though Mike Pence will begin work to repeal Obamacare, the act had accomplished “some good things.” It remains unclear whether Conway’s comments were simply worded gently, or if Trump is truly reconsidering his intentions to eliminate Obamacare immediately, a move that could leave nearly 20 million US citizens without healthcare.

...AND THE TWEETS KEEP COMING
The 2017 Trump tweetstorm has begun, and the President-elect’s first issuances of the year were, as usual, brash and critical ones. The tweets were directed at North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who during a New Year’s address, announced that his country’s intercontinental ballistic missile plans are nearly complete. In response, the President-elect tweeted, “North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won’t happen!” Less than an hour later Trump fired another, this time stating, “China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won’t help with North Korea. Nice!” One year ago, Trump was praising how Jong Un assumed rule after his father’s death, a process which included the execution of his uncle and several others in an effort to consolidate power.
