NEW YEAR'S DAY ATTACK IN ISTANBUL
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38484029
Little more than one hour into 2017, a gunman entered a waterside dance club in Turkey and opened fire, killing 39 people and injuring an additional 70. Nearly 700 attendees were celebrating the new year at upscale Instanbul venue Reina when the attacker entered, killed a security guard and a policeman, then randomly opened fire on the crowd. Though no official statement has been made regarding the gunman’s motivations, it is suspected the attack was orchestrated by the Islamic State. Last September, Turkish ground forces initiated ground attacks in Syria against IS and Kurdish groups, after which IS leaders encouraged their followers to carry out attacks inside Turkey.

MARIAH: NYE FIASCO
Following a disastrous New Years Eve appearance in Times Square, Mariah Carey’s management team is alleging that the show’s organizers, Dick Clark Productions, “set her up to fail.” Carey rep Nicole Perna confirmed that technical difficulties were to blame for her client’s messy performance, but claimed the show’s producers were well aware of the problems, and chose to go live instead of delaying their broadcast to address equipment malfunctions. The production company has called Perna’s claims “absurd”, stating, “as the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists.”

WHAT'S NEXT FOR RONDA ROUSEY?
After suffering a second straight knockout loss, the career of former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey may be over. The most recent defeat came at the hands of current bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in a bout that lasted less than one minute. Following her loss, Rousey skipped the UFC 207 post-fight news conference at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but later released a statement reading, “I need to take some time to reflect and think about the future. Thank you for believing in me and understanding.” Rousey is a former Olympian who spent the majority of her UFC career undefeated, and in September 2015, was voted the Best Female Athlete Ever in an online ESPN poll.
