MAKE YOUR SINK A REAL WASHING MACHINE

Clothes are great fun, but washing them is not, especially for travelers, apartments dwellers or anyone without a washing machine at home. Thankfully, 2016 provided the ultimate personal laundry solution—Dolfi!  The portable ultrasonic washing device, which is no larger than a bar of soap, transforms any sink into a fully functional washing machine. Its technology cleans fabric fibers from the inside outwards, providing a gentler wash than most standard laundry machines. When placed in water and powered, Dolfi’s transducer fires modulated sound waves that form microscopic, high-pressure bubbles, loosening dirt from submerged garments. After a half-hour of treatment, the garments can be removed, rinsed and hung to dry. End result? Clean clothing at home, minus stretching and color fading!

THIS SQUIRT GUN HEALS

This year, a “squirt gun” that increases the human body’s ability to heal itself provided an unprecedented means for severe burn victims to recover quickly, without extensive scarring. The SkinGun, which resembles a glue gun, dispenses personal human stem cells, which then develop into specific bodily cell types. Stem cells are first drawn from a patient’s individual skin sample, blended with a water solution, then emitted as a mist, forming small islands over the burn areas. As the islands grow, they merge and form a protective layer over the burn, preventing infection while initiating the healing process. Spray paintable human skin, not too shabby 2016!

 VOICE EDITING IS HERE. BE VERY AFRAID.

This one’s neat, but not too comforting. After Thanksgiving, software giant Adobe publically demoed its VoCo audio editor, a speech-shaping tool that can be thought of as a Photoshop for voice. Users can easily edit recorded speech, seamlessly alter what is being said, and even create entirely new spoken sentences. VoCo (short for Voice Conversion), works by analyzing the phenomes (sounds that comprise a spoken language), within recorded audio to build a vocal model of the speaker. The spoken words are then displayed onscreen for users to endlessly manipulate and transform. Should VoCo’s development continue as projected, it is expected to be integrated into Adobe’s Audition audio-editing software in late 2017.

 GETTING FAKE NEWS OFF OF FACEBOOK

After Donald Trump’s surprise election, Facebook became synonymous with fake news. When reports emerged that misleading headlines on Facebook may have measurably swayed voters, CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted “there is more work to be done” to keep false news off the platform. One headline reading “FBI Agent Suspected in Hillary Email Leaks Found Dead”, was shared 568,000 times shortly before the election. The story, which claims Clinton arranged the murders of a non-existent FBI agent and his wife, was traced to an imaginary news agency titled the Denver Guardian. Zuckerberg had previously defended Facebook, claiming that less than one percent of all posts contained intentionally misleading content—though his numbers may have been on, studies showed initial posts weren’t the problem, but rather the powerful ripple effects of post sharing.

SUB AQUATIC ROBOTS WILL CLEAN UP THE OCEAN FLOOR

2016 brought with it many new robots, including the Eelume. With its red eyes and menacing snake-like body though, this one looks more like a Sentinel from The Matrix than a friendly, “subsea intervention” device. Designed to monitor and repair underwater utilities, these self-propelled modules live on the ocean floor, where they function as mechanical janitors. Similar maintenance devices already exist, but their awkward builds make intricate repairs extremely difficult. The Eelume’s lithe design provides easy access to tight, nearly unreachable, spaces.  The cost and complexity of underwater machinery has substantially increased over the last decade, making the Eelume an invaluable development for subsea engineers.

WILL VIRTUAL REALITY MAKE HEAD TRANSPLANTS A REALITY?

This year brought with it the announcement of mankind’s first human head transplant, to be performed next year in China by Dr. Sergio Canavero. The doctor, who leads the Heaven project (Head Anastomosis Venture), claims to have successfully completed the procedure on multiple animals, including a dog that was able to walk after the transplant. Canavero has yet to fully explain the procedure though, and the international medical community has its doubts. He will admit however that the procedure brings a “high likelihood” for patients to experience “unexpected psychological reactions”, so he has designed a VR system to help patients “experience” their new bodies. VR gaming systems are currently top-selling holiday gifts, but Canavero’s system would certainly be the most ambitious usage of VR tech yet.   Learn more;

POISON TAP GET YOU ONLINE FOR $5

An independent computer developer spent 2016 creating the Poison Tap, a $5 USB device that lets anyone hack any computer, even locked and password protected ones, using a simple plug-and-pull process. Once plugged in, the device simulates internet activity, then hijacks the resulting data traffic. The information captured includes “cookies”, tiny data files that store details about a user’s internet activities. After capture, cookies may be used to access personal account information on websites the hack victim frequents. A Poison Tap requires no training to use and continues its attack even after USB removal, granting hackers continuous, undetected access to a user’s accounts. No fun 2016. Hopefully 2017 can help out.

MICROSOFT THROWS DOWN. IS APPLE WORRIED?

Fall of 2016 brought with it two major product reveals from two computer giants, and for once, Microsoft’s innovations may have trumped Apple’s. While the latter introduced a new MacBook Pro model, with its so-so “Touch Bar” update, Microsoft introduced the Surface Studio, a 28-inch comprehensive PC that reclines to function as an interactive drafting table. With eye-grabbing features like a screen stylus and Surface Dial (a small, circular device that provides a secondary way to interacting with the touchscreen), the Surface Studio is Microsoft’s most innovative release in recent memory. It also allows users to easily create and experiment with 3-D content. Bill Gates for the win!
