At this point in our history, the concept of suffrage is not something most people have had to fight for in recent years. With how far our country has come, it is hard to believe that women claimed their right to vote as recently as 1920 with the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment. One major contributor to the women's suffrage movement was Susan B. Anthony.  

Susan Brownell Anthony was born in Massachusetts on February 15, 1820. She grew up in a Quaker family and from the age of 17 she started her fight towards equal rights for both African Americans and Women. Anthony worked first for the temperance movement where she was denied an opportunity to speak due to her gender. She worked closely with Elizabeth Cady Stanton to form the New York State Woman's Rights Committee and start petitions to win women the right to vote. For her work for abolition, Anthony worked for the American Anti-Slavery Society until the Civil War. Her focus turned to woman's suffrage after the war and Susan B Anthony was tireless in her work. With Stanton, she formed both the American Equal Rights Association (1866) and the National Woman Suffrage Association (1869). Susan B Anthony was so passionate about the right to vote that she tried to vote in the 1872 presidential election and faced criminal charges including a fine that she refused to ever pay.  

Women didn't get the right to vote until 1920, fourteen years after Anthony died in Rochester, New York. In her obituary she was quoted to have told her friend shortly before her death, "To think I have had more than 60 years of hard struggle for a little liberty, and then to die without it seems so cruel."
