There is a new World Champion for the normal hill in ski jumping. The champion is Piotr Zyla, the 34-year-old ski jumper from Cieszyn Poland. At the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, Karl Geiger of Germany received second place and Anze Lanisek of Slovenia won third.
Zyla, a two-time World Cup ski jumping champion, showed extreme joy upon his victory. Zyla is one of the crowd favorites of Polish ski jumpers and is a vital member of the Polish ski jumping team.
Second place jumper and local hero Karl Geiger showcased his skills by placing second at this major event. Geiger had a mediocre season thus far with his main highlight being his victory at the Ski Flying World Championship in December.
Some of the favorites to win the event in Germany failed to do as expected. Anze Lanisek of Slovenia was the only one of the favorites to place on the podium.
The top contender to win the championship, Halvor Egner Granerud of Norway, failed to place on the podium. He finished 16th in the first round and managed to place 4th in the final standings. Zyla’s teammate and defending champion of the event Dawid Kubacki placed 5th. Crowd favorite Stefan Kraft of Austria placed seventh.
