The Middle Country Legislative Assembly, a district committee that considers issues in the neighborhood and fosters a sense of community, enjoyed two successful wins in the month of March.
Last year, students from both Newfield and Centereach High Schools along with the winners of the "Swing Arm Camera" posters had advocated at the Suffolk County Legislature with Dawn Sharrock, the Legislative Chair, and Diana Cook, Director of Fine Arts & Music, to make the School Bus Camera Program a reality. These students were joined by students from the Longwood School District. Their advocacy had moved lawmakers into passing this critical piece of legislation that targets drivers who ignore the stop-signs on school buses.
"As a father of three children, nothing is more important than ensuring their safety and well-being," County Executive Steve Bellone said in a statement. "This new technology will ensure that our students will be further protected against dangerous driving when they are boarding a bus to go to school."
Another win enjoyed by the Middle Country Legislative Assembly was their work in ensuring that Stagecoach Elementary School was no longer a polling site. Covered extensively by News12, Suffolk legislators met directly with the committee and advocated on the students' behalf. All of Long Island was able to observe the strength of the Middle Country community and its commitment to the safety of our children.
